Multichannel vs. Email Only

Understand the difference between multichannel and email-only campaigns, and how each affects your outreach steps and prospect profiles.

Written by Rhegen

When creating a campaign in Interceptly, you choose one of two outreach types: Multichannel or Email Only. Your choice determines which outreach steps are available in your sequence and how prospect profiles are created and deduplicated.

Outreach Types

Multichannel

Multichannel campaigns use both LinkedIn and email for outreach. Your sequence can include connection requests, LinkedIn messages, and follow-up emails.

Use this type when your target audience is reachable on LinkedIn, and you want to combine social and email touchpoints in a single sequence.

Email Only

Email Only campaigns use email outreach exclusively. No LinkedIn steps are included.

Use this type for cold email sequences or when LinkedIn is not relevant or available for your target audience.

πŸŽ“ Note: The "Premium only" toggle is not available in Email Only campaigns. This setting applies only to LinkedIn-based functionality.

Outreach Steps

The steps available in your sequence depend on the outreach type you select.

Steps in Multichannel Campaigns

Multichannel campaigns support a combination of LinkedIn and email steps, including:

Steps in Email Only Campaigns

Email Only campaigns are limited to email steps. Fewer options are available in the sequence builder.

Profile Types and Deduplication

Interceptly uses two profile types, and the campaign's outreach type determines which one is created.

Standard Profile (LinkedIn Profile)

  • Created in Multichannel campaigns.

  • Deduplicated by LinkedIn URL.

  • Within a single LinkedIn account (or workspace, if the relevant setting is enabled), only one profile with a unique LinkedIn URL can exist.

Email Profile

  • Created in Email Only campaigns.

  • Deduplicated by email address (personal or work).

  • Each email address must be unique within the account or workspace.

How Deduplication Works in Each Campaign Type

In Multichannel campaigns:

  • Multiple profiles with the same email address are allowed, as long as each profile has a unique LinkedIn URL (or no LinkedIn URL at all).

In Email Only campaigns:

  • Each email address must be unique.

  • If you want to add a prospect to a new Email Only campaign while they are already in an existing one, the email addresses used in each campaign must be different.

  • LinkedIn URLs are ignored by the system and may be omitted or repeated.

πŸ’‘ Tip: If you plan to run the same prospect through both a Multichannel and an Email Only campaign, set up both campaigns before adding any profiles. This ensures each campaign assigns the correct profile type from the start.

Profile Behavior When Switching Campaign Types

The outreach type only affects the profile type at the point of creation. Once a profile is created, its type is fixed, regardless of any subsequent changes.

You can change the campaign's outreach type after creation, but this will not update the type of existing profiles. Profiles that are manually moved between campaigns also retain their original type.

🚨 Important: If you want to add the same prospect to both a Multichannel campaign and an Email Only campaign, make sure each campaign has the correct outreach type set before adding profiles.

If uploading via CSV, select the correct outreach type before uploading.

If sourcing from LinkedIn, the profile type is assigned when the search task is processed, and new profiles are first added to your campaign.

Filtering by Outreach Type in Your Inbox

The Interceptly inbox lets you filter messages by channel. You can view email responses and LinkedIn replies separately. Learn more about inbox filters here.

FAQs

Q: Can I use the same email address in both a Multichannel and an Email Only campaign?

A: Yes, you can add a prospect with the same email address to a Multichannel campaign and an Email Only campaign. Multichannel campaigns deduplicate by LinkedIn URL, not by email, so the same email can appear across multiple Multichannel campaigns. Email Only campaigns deduplicate by email address, so each email must be unique within that campaign type.

Q: What happens if I change my campaign from Multichannel to Email Only after profiles have been added?

A: Changing the outreach type does not change the type of profiles already in the campaign. Existing profiles keep their original type. The new outreach type only applies to profiles added after the change.

Q: Can I move a profile from a Multichannel campaign to an Email Only campaign?

A: Yes, but the profile retains its original type (standard/LinkedIn profile) after being moved. It is not converted to an email profile.

πŸš€ Success! Choosing the right outreach type before adding prospects ensures your profiles are created correctly, and your sequence steps match your strategy.
